Cylinder & Slide began in Fremont, Nebraska, in November 1978. Founded by Bill Laughridge, the business developed around pistolsmithing rather than the mass production of a single proprietary firearm. Its published history describes the growth of a specialist workshop and the connection between bench work, customer projects and the practical-shooting community.
A contemporary account preserved on the company’s website follows Laughridge’s involvement with repair work at the Second Chance shooting event. That setting helps explain the business’s identity: the workshop was part of a wider network of shooters, makers and specialists whose work often crossed company boundaries.
The Cylinder & Slide name therefore needs to be read alongside the original manufacturer of any firearm associated with it.
For a documented custom example, the important story is what the workshop contributed and when that work took place. A complete build, a later alteration and a separately supplied component are different forms of involvement. Original invoices, correspondence and dated photographs can help establish the distinction.
