SIG Sauer’s history reaches back to a Swiss wagon factory founded near the Rhine Falls in 1853. The enterprise later entered firearms production and adopted the name Schweizerische Industrie-Gesellschaft, commonly shortened to SIG. This industrial beginning is distinct from the much later establishment of the American company now bearing the SIG Sauer name.
The manufacturer’s historical account describes expansion through relationships with Hämmerli in Switzerland and J. P. Sauer & Sohn in Germany during the 1970s. SIGARMS was established in Virginia in 1985 to serve the American market. It changed its name to SIG Sauer in 2007, and the company completed a move to Newington, New Hampshire, in 2014.
These different places and organisations are important when studying an individual firearm. A Swiss-made SIG, a German SIG Sauer and a later American example should be placed within their own documented manufacturing histories. Shared branding does not make their origins identical. Factory markings, model designations and dated records provide the necessary detail.
