Colt’s history begins with Samuel Colt’s work on revolving firearms and his American patent of 1836. That year, his first manufacturing enterprise was established in Paterson, New Jersey. It was an early business venture, not the same corporate entity as the later Hartford company, and the distinction helps explain the different dates encountered in accounts of Colt’s origins.
The company’s historical timeline records the collaboration with Samuel Walker in 1847 and the incorporation of Colt’s Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company in 1855. Hartford became central to the expanding enterprise. After Samuel Colt died in 1862, Elizabeth Colt inherited his controlling interest, linking the business’s later development with the wider history of the Colt family.
These separate chapters are more useful than a single sweeping claim about an uninterrupted founding date. They place early Paterson production, the Walker period and the Hartford factory in their own settings. For an individual firearm, model designation, markings and surviving factory records provide the next level of detail. Colt’s history can then be read through the object itself, with its documented production period distinguished from later ownership, restoration or decorative work.
