Uberti was founded by Aldo Uberti in Gardone Val Trompia, Italy, in 1959. The company began by making reproductions of Civil War-era percussion revolvers. Its own history records a later expansion into other firearms associated with the American nineteenth century, including cartridge revolvers and rifles.
This combination of Italian manufacture and American historical designs is central to the brand’s identity. An Uberti example may reproduce the appearance of a much older firearm, but its model designation is not a statement that it was manufactured in that original period. The historical design and the date of the reproduction are separate facts and should remain separate in any description.
For readers studying Uberti, the manufacturer’s catalogue helps identify the represented design, while the individual firearm’s markings and documents establish its own production history. Those records also distinguish an ordinary catalogue example from later engraving or other individually documented work. The company’s place in firearms history is therefore not that of an original Civil War manufacturer. It is the story of a twentieth-century Italian maker interpreting earlier American forms, making the relationship between original design, reproduction and subsequent ownership the most useful starting point for understanding an example.
