John Vernon Martz was an American specialist whose custom work is associated with Luger and P38 pistols. A first-hand feature by J. B. Wood in American Handgunner’s May–June 1988 issue records Martz’s background as a tool-and-die maker and examines an example of his work. It provides a period reference for a maker whose name can otherwise be difficult to separate from later descriptions.
Martz’s role was different from that of the original factories that produced the pistols he worked on. His contribution belongs to the later history of an individual firearm.
A description should therefore preserve both identities: the original manufacturer and the craftsman responsible for a documented transformation. Calling an example simply a Martz pistol can leave that important distinction unexplained.
Contemporary articles, original correspondence and workshop records help establish the connection between a particular object and Martz’s work. They also provide a sounder foundation than assumptions based on appearance alone. His place in custom-pistol history is best understood through these documented examples, where the original design and the later maker’s authorship can be studied together without confusing one with the other.
