Springfield Armory has two histories that should be kept distinct. The United States government armory in Springfield, Massachusetts, began manufacturing arms in 1794 and closed in 1968. Today, its history is interpreted by the National Park Service. That institution was not the same organisation as the later commercial firearms company using the Springfield Armory name.
The modern company’s published account records the Reese family’s acquisition of the name in 1974 and its production of the M1A rifle. Its subsequent range included 1911 pistols and other handgun families. This is a separate business chapter, not evidence of uninterrupted government-armory ownership or continuous production at the historic Massachusetts site.

Military records may be relevant to an arsenal-produced example, while commercial documentation is needed for a later company product.
