Description
The Colt Lightweight Commander, a semi-automatic pistol, not only serves as a piece of historical armament but also as a commemorative artifact celebrating the distinguished career of Texas Ranger Captain Manuel T. Gonzaullas, known by the nickname “El Solo Lobo.” This particular firearm is a unique batch of five units dispatched to the Southwest Sporting Goods Company in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on September 28, 1950. Notably crafted in a .38 Super caliber with a 4 1/4 inch barrel, this pistol is distinguished by its luxurious blue finish and customized grips that deviate from the standard design.
The engraving on the pistol’s left slide is a testament to its significance, featuring the words “Texas Rangers/1920-1951”, the endearing moniker “El Solo Lobo,” and an artistic rendering of the state of Texas. On the opposite side, the right slide presents the emblematic Texas Rangers star, complemented by the inscriptions “PRESENTED/UPON RETIREMENT” and “Captain/Manuel T. Gonzaullas,” all set against an evocative crucifix background. The gun’s grips are equally personalized, adorned with the initials “M/T/G” and a traditional Rampant Colt-style horse set against a desert scene, further enhancing its collectible value.
Additionally, the pistol features a uniquely “bobbed” trigger guard, a modification that leaves it prominently open and visible—a detail consistent with Captain Gonzaullas’ personal preferences, as evidenced by his extensive collection of over 580 firearms and weapons. Although there is no direct evidence to confirm that this specific gun belonged to Gonzaullas, the custom modifications strongly indicate that it may have been a bespoke gift upon his retirement.
The package includes not just the gun but also a leather soft case, exquisitely tooled with motifs that celebrate the Texas Rangers, and complementary literature, including “Texas Iron: Guns of the Texas Rangers” and a biographical piece titled “Captain M.T. Gonzaullas: Lone Wolf” by Malsch. This ensemble not only underscores the cultural and historical importance of the firearm but also enhances its value as a collector’s item, steeped in the lore of one of Texas’ most famed law enforcement figures.
