Description
Offered here is an exceptional and likely unique prototype of the Smith & Wesson Model 4006. This prototype was intended to be the flagship model of Smith & Wesson’s third generation of their iconic double action/single action series of handguns. The Model 4006 was officially released on January 17, 1990, and shortly thereafter, it was selected by the California State Police (CSP) as their standard service pistol. This selection marked a significant endorsement of the model’s reliability and performance.
The Smith & Wesson 4006 remained in service with the CSP until 2011, although a light rail was eventually added to the design to accommodate modern tactical needs. This long service period is a testament to the 4006’s durability and effectiveness in law enforcement use. The prototype offered here is fitted with a white dot blade front sight and a fully adjustable rear sight with protective ears, giving the pistol its distinctive and recognizable silhouette.
The left side of the slide is marked with the Smith & Wesson address, while the frame is marked on the left side with the model designation and a unique “X” prefix prototype serial number. This particular prototype provides a rare opportunity to own a piece of firearm history, reflecting the innovation and quality associated with Smith & Wesson.
Included with the pistol is a generic hard case and an extra magazine, making this not only a rare collector’s piece but also a complete package for enthusiasts and historians alike. This prototype Smith & Wesson Model 4006 is a must-have for any serious collector of iconic firearms.
