An exceptional collection, this set comprises three pairs of sequentially numbered 3rd Generation Colt Frontier Six Shooter Single Action Army Revolvers. They boast historically accurate black powder frames and come complete with original packaging, literature, and authenticity documents addressed to the esteemed Colt aficionado Don Wilkerson.
Each pair, unique in its finishing – with pairs A & B adorned in a gleaming ‘Mirror-Brite’ blue, C & D in sterling silver, and E & F in a resplendent gold – features individually numbered cylinders, delicately beveled by hand. The numbers “1” and “2” are intricately inlaid in gold or expertly engraved on the back strap of each revolver, a testament to the craftsmanship of Colt’s Master Engraver, George Spring. The distinguished fleur-de-lis checkered grips complement the historic black powder frame design, creating a harmony of elegance and tradition.
Illustrated within Don Wilkerson’s authoritative text, “The Post-War Colt Single-Action Revolver, 1976-1986,” this set represents a rarity in Colt manufacturing: less than 1% of these 3rd Generation revolvers were factory engraved, with a mere 2% chambered in the notable .44-40 caliber. This set is even more unique, as it belongs to an exclusive 4% of consecutively numbered revolvers boasting such distinctive finishes.
Authenticated by factory letters detailing their configuration and provenance, the revolvers were dispatched in two-pair sets to Wilkerson’s Single Action Shop on March 22, 1985. Orders 2922 covered pairs A & B, 2923 for C & D, and 2924 for E & F. Each revolver is engraved with matching serial numbers, standard Colt markings, and traditional blade and frame groove sights. The collection is housed in a custom-crafted hardwood case, explicitly designed for this exquisite sextet, accompanied by the original boxes and factory literature, including the manuals. The case, tailored to safeguard these historical pieces, bears the marks of careful handling and storied preservation.
