The SIG P210-5

Specifications and Historical Innovations

The SIG P210-5 is a testament to SIG’s dedication to precision engineering and innovation in sport shooting pistols. With its enhanced barrel length, adjustable sights, and ergonomic design, the P210-5 is highly sought after by collectors and sport shooters alike.

General Specifications

  • Caliber: Available in 9 mm or 7.65 mm Parabellum.
  • Barrel Length: 150 mm (or 180 mm for 9 mm caliber).
  • Sights: Features a front sight base, a sport sight, and a micrometer-adjustable rear sight on the slide.
  • Trigger: Equipped with a sport trigger for a crisp, precise pull.
  • Grip Frame: Serrations on the front of the grip frame provide improved control and handling.

Unique Features

The P210-5 builds on the legendary P210-2 with refinements tailored for sport shooting. Its longer barrel enhances accuracy, while the micrometer sight allows for precise adjustments, making it a top choice for competitive marksmen.

The 1969 Gas Pressure Lock Experiment

In 1969, SIG explored groundbreaking innovations to meet the growing demand for sport pistols in larger calibers with reduced recoil and unmatched precision. Spearheaded by Walter Gletti, SIG developed a prototype P210 with a gas pressure lock, a response to market competitors like the Colt Gold Cup and S&W M52.

Key Developments

  • Prototypes: Two models were created in .38 WC caliber, each featuring 6” barrels:
    • A traditional P210-5 design.
    • A unique model with an extended barrel and gas pressure lock.
  • Innovations: A new magazine with straight walls resolved feeding issues caused by the steep cartridge ramp at the chamber entrance.

Challenges and Outcome

While the prototypes functioned flawlessly, the modifications were so extensive that manufacturing the new design would have required building an entirely different pistol. Additionally, the gas pressure lock design faced fouling issues, particularly with lead bullet ammunition, leading to the project’s abandonment.

The SIG P210-5 remains a revered firearm in the world of precision shooting, blending timeless craftsmanship with innovative attempts to push the boundaries of design. Each model reflects SIG’s commitment to excellence, making it a prized addition to any enthusiast’s collection.

The Specs and information on the different gun models listed below are based on Das Grosse Buch der SIG-Pistolen, “The Big Book of SIG Pistols,” by Lorenz Vetter.
