Colt’s history begins with Samuel Colt’s work on revolving firearms and his American patent of 1836. That year, his first manufacturing enterprise was established in Paterson, New Jersey. It was an early business venture, not the same corporate entity as the later Hartford company, and the distinction helps explain the different dates encountered in accounts of Colt’s origins.
The company’s historical timeline records the collaboration with Samuel Walker in 1847 and the incorporation of Colt’s Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company in 1855. Hartford became central to the expanding enterprise. After Samuel Colt died in 1862, Elizabeth Colt inherited his controlling interest, linking the business’s later development with the wider history of the Colt family.
These separate chapters are more useful than a single sweeping claim about an uninterrupted founding date. They place early Paterson production, the Walker period and the Hartford factory in their own settings. For an individual firearm, model designation, markings and surviving factory records provide the next level of detail. Colt’s history can then be read through the object itself, with its documented production period distinguished from later ownership, restoration or decorative work.
Colt licensed Ohio Ordnance Works to manufacture a Colt-marked, closed-bolt semi-automatic Model 1918 rifle, which was introduced at the 2015 SHOT Show. This article identifies each documented participant’s role, the rifle’s identifying features, and the OOW patent behind its mechanism.
Presentation guns, commemoratives, and limited editions represent different categories of collectible firearms. Factory records, physical evidence, and documented provenance help establish what a particular firearm actually is.
A factory letter can document a firearm’s original configuration and shipping information when records survive. It cannot independently prove current originality, complete ownership history, or market value.
Kelly Laster wakes at 3 a.m. in a Dallas hotel, pours coffee, and starts cutting steel, all while staying on Portugal time so the jet lag never catches him. A jeweler who taught himself to engrave firearms and refined the craft in Italy, he’s turned Texas cattle brands into single action revolvers that collectors chase, which makes him the world’s first jet set cattle brand gun engraver.
The Colt Single Action Army and modern double-action revolvers differ fundamentally in action operation and cylinder access. Understanding those differences also helps collectors identify the Colt’s three production generations.
A cardboard box and a few pieces of paper can add thousands of dollars to a collectible firearm’s value. Understanding the packaging equation can mean the difference between a smart buy and a missed opportunity.
