Smith & Wesson: A History Told Through Its Handguns

Smith & Wesson began with the partnership of Horace Smith and Daniel B. Wesson in 1852. Its early history is closely connected with the development of cartridge firearms. The company’s timeline records the introduction of the Model 1 revolver in 1857 and the Model 3 American in 1870, placing those designs in separate stages of nineteenth-century manufacture.

The range continued to develop in new directions. The .38 Military & Police appeared in 1899, while the Model 39 self-loading pistol and Model 41 target pistol belong to the company’s twentieth-century history. These models show why Smith & Wesson should not be treated simply as a revolver maker or described through one period alone.

For readers studying the brand, the model family is the natural starting point, followed by its production period and documented variation. Factory markings and original records help distinguish a particular example from later versions with related names. Company timelines provide the broad chronology, but they cannot establish every detail of an individual firearm. Bringing those two levels together gives a clearer picture of Smith & Wesson’s development without relying on sweeping claims about universal rarity, performance or historical importance.
