Description
There are engraved Colts… and then there are pieces like this.
This exceptional cased pair of Colt 3rd Generation Storekeeper Single Action Army revolvers represents a rare convergence of factory heritage, master engraving, and exhibition-level presentation. Both revolvers are chambered in .45 Colt and feature 4-inch barrels in the desirable Storekeeper configuration, retaining the ejector rod housing for practical refinement while preserving the iconic lines of the Model P.
But what truly elevates this pair is the artistry.
Each revolver is fully engraved and signed by John J. Adams Jr. of Adams & Adams Engraving, executed in classic C. Helfricht-style scrollwork. The engraving is deep, precise, and beautifully balanced across the frames, cylinders, backstraps, and barrels. The scroll flows naturally along the contours of the guns, accentuating rather than overwhelming the original Colt lines, exactly how exhibition engraving should be done.
The finishes are equally striking. Both revolvers feature a rich blue, vivid case-hardened frame, creating dramatic contrast against the finely cut scrollwork. The cylinders are engraved in a matching style, maintaining symmetry and visual harmony across the pair.
The grips deserve their own moment.
Each revolver is fitted with carved ivory stocks, masterfully sculpted with raised relief Western motifs. The carving is detailed yet tasteful, complementing the engraving rather than competing with it. The ivory’s natural tone against the deep blue and case colors gives the pair a timeless, almost museum-quality presence.
Both revolvers are housed in a fitted presentation case lined in vibrant red, complete with period-style lid label artwork referencing the classic Colt New Model Army revolver advertisement. The presentation feels intentional and curated; this was built as a matched exhibition set from the start.
Accompanying documentation from Adams & Adams Engraving authenticates the work, detailing the engraving style, finish, and grip maker. Original invoices are included, further reinforcing provenance and craftsmanship.
Matched, signed, documented, engraved Colt pairs do not surface often, particularly in Storekeeper configuration and chambered in .45 Colt. This is not simply two engraved single-action armies. It is a cohesive artistic statement built on one of the most legendary revolver platforms ever produced.
For the collector who appreciates not just condition or rarity, but craftsmanship and presentation, this pair stands in a different category altogether.
